ILOVEYOU was a computer worm that spread primarily through email attachments. Once a user opened the attachment, the virus would send itself out to everyone in the victim’s address book. The email would contain the Subject line “I love you” and would usually look like it came from a friend or family member.

When the email was opened, the virus would take advantage of a flaw in Microsoft’s Outlook software to overwrite important files on the victim’s computer. It would also change the file extensions of common files so that they could no longer be opened. In some cases, the ILOVEYOU virus would even delete files entirely.

The ILOVEYOU virus caused such devastation that it was dubbed the “Love Bug” by the media. It is estimated that the virus affected over 50 million computers in just a matter of weeks.
