Spanish History

The History of Spain is a long and complex one, spanning back to the early Middle Ages. Spain has been home to some of history’s most famous figures, from the Spanish Inquisition to Christopher Columbus. Here is a brief overview of the country’s past.

Spain’s recorded history began with the arrival of the Phoenicians, Greeks, and Carthaginians to the Iberian Peninsula. The Roman Empire then conquered the peninsula in the 2nd century BC, making it a province of the empire. The Visigoths took control of Spain after the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th century AD. The Visigothic Kingdom was short-lived, however, as the Moorish Conquest began in the 8th century.

The Moors, Arabs from North Africa, conquered Spain and held control of the country for the next 700 years. During this time, Spain was known as Al-Andalus. The Moors introduced new technologies and ideas to Spain, making it a center of learning during the Middle Ages. The Spanish Inquisition began in the 15th century as a way to root out non-Catholic beliefs.

In 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed from Spain to the Americas, marking the beginning of Spain’s colonial empire. Spain went on to colonize much of South and Central America, as well as parts of the Caribbean. Spain’s empire peak in the 16th century, but it began to decline in the following centuries.

The Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939 caused great upheaval in the country. This conflict, which began as a struggle between the Republicans and Nationalists, eventually involved multiple foreign powers. The Nationalists, led by Francisco Franco, emerged victorious, and Franco ruled Spain as a dictator until his death in 1975.

Since Franco’s death, Spain has been a constitutional monarchy. Its current king is Felipe VI. Spain is a member of the European Union and has a population of over 46 million people..Resource
